Stellate Ganglion Nerve Block

A stellate ganglion nerve block is an injection that numbs branches of nerves in your neck. This helps doctors find and treat a number of problems linked to the nerves. Treatment may require a series of injections.

A stellate ganglion nerve block is a procedure where a local anesthetic (numbing medication) is injected near the stellate ganglion, a collection of nerves located in the neck at the level of the sixth and seventh cervical vertebrae. This injection is used to diagnose and treat various conditions associated with the nerves that pass through or near the stellate ganglion.

Here’s how a stellate ganglion nerve block procedure is typically performed:

  1. Preparation: The patient is positioned on an examination table, usually lying on their back. Vital signs such as blood pressure, heart rate, and oxygen levels may be monitored throughout the procedure.

  2. Anesthesia: A local anesthetic may be applied to the skin to numb the injection site. In some cases, sedation may also be provided to help the patient relax during the procedure.

  3. Imaging Guidance: Using fluoroscopy (live X-ray imaging) or ultrasound, the healthcare provider locates the stellate ganglion and identifies the surrounding nerves. This helps ensure accurate placement of the injection needle.

  4. Injection: Once the stellate ganglion is located, the healthcare provider inserts a thin needle through the skin and into the area near the ganglion. A mixture of local anesthetic and sometimes a steroid medication is injected around the ganglion to numb the nerves and reduce inflammation.

  5. Assessment: After the injection, the patient is typically monitored for a short period to evaluate the response. Some patients may experience immediate pain relief or changes in symptoms, while others may experience a gradual reduction in symptoms over the following days to weeks.

Can be used to diagnose and treat various conditions

Stellate ganglion nerve blocks can be used to diagnose and treat various conditions, including:

  • Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), also known as reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD)
  • Sympathetically maintained pain
  • Phantom limb pain
  • Raynaud’s phenomenon
  • Herpes zoster (shingles) affecting the head, neck, or upper extremities

Treatment with stellate ganglion nerve blocks may require a series of injections performed over time, depending on the underlying condition being treated and the individual patient’s response to the treatment.
