Superion® InterSpinous Spacer

The Superion® InterSpinous Spacer, also known as the Vertiflex® procedure, is a minimally invasive surgical option used to treat lumbar spinal stenosis, a condition characterized by the narrowing of the spinal canal in the lower back. This narrowing can put pressure on the nerves in the spinal canal, leading to symptoms such as pain, numbness, and weakness in the lower back and legs.

The Superion® InterSpinous Spacer is designed to relieve symptoms of lumbar spinal stenosis by creating space between the spinous processes, the bony protrusions along the back of the spine. This spacer device is made of a biocompatible material and is inserted between the spinous processes of the affected vertebrae, typically at the level of the stenosis.

Here’s an overview of the Superion® InterSpinous Spacer procedure:

  1. Preparation: The patient is positioned on an examination table, usually lying face down. Local anesthesia is administered to numb the skin and tissues in the lower back.

  2. Placement: Using fluoroscopic guidance (live X-ray imaging), the surgeon inserts the Superion® InterSpinous Spacer between the spinous processes of the affected vertebrae. The device is carefully positioned to create space in the spinal canal and relieve pressure on the nerves.

  3. Fixation: Once the spacer is in place, it is secured to the spinous processes to prevent movement. No screws or bone grafts are typically required for fixation.

  4. Closure: The incision site is closed with sutures or surgical adhesive, and a small bandage is applied to cover the wound.

Often used as part of a comprehensive treatment plan

The Superion® InterSpinous Spacer procedure is typically performed on an outpatient basis, meaning the patient can typically go home the same day as the procedure. Recovery time is generally shorter compared to traditional open spinal surgery, with most patients able to resume normal activities within a few weeks.

Benefits of the Superion® InterSpinous Spacer procedure may include:

  • Relief of symptoms associated with lumbar spinal stenosis, such as pain, numbness, and weakness in the lower back and legs
  • Preservation of spinal stability and motion
  • Minimally invasive approach with less tissue damage, blood loss, and postoperative pain compared to traditional open surgery
